Obituary for Helen Olsen

Born: April 13, 1920

Died: October 04, 2011

Services: November 5th Saturday, Memorial Service 11:00 a.m. St. Mary Church

Helen Comnes Olsen, 91, of Greenwich, passed away, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, October 4th at Nathaniel Witherell Nursing Home in Greenwich. She was the wife of the late William Torp Olsen, her husband of sixty-five years.

Helen was born in Greenwich on April 13, 1920 to the late Augustus Comnes and Agnes McNulty Comnes. In 1943, Helen met William Olsen, a Norwegian with the Royal Norwegian Navy, while he was in training in New York City. They married four months later, before he went back out to sea, transporting arms to the Allies in Europe. After the war, Helen and William moved to Norway with their daughter, Patricia. They later returned to Greenwich where they made their home for the rest of their lives and where they raised their six children. Helen's greatest joy in life was her family. She gave her love and enthusiastic support to her beloved husband, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

For a number of years, Helen was a waitress at the Clambox in Cos Cob. She shared many interests with her husband, including traveling, gardening and working in the boat yards. They especially enjoyed community service and dedicated themselves to working with fraternal organizations. Helen served as member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Cos Cob Volunteer Fire Department, the Women's Auxiliary of the Greenwich American Legion, the Carpenters 210 Retirees Club, as Treasurer and President of the Sons of Norway Skaugum Lodge 468, and as Vice Chair of the Nathaniel Whiterell Residence Council. She belonged to the Greenwich Senior Center and attended the Greenwich Adult Day Care Center. She was a life long parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Greenwich. Her commitment to community service was an inspiration and laid the foundation for the family's extensive involvement in their own communities.

Helen's husband, William, passed away in 2009. She is survived by their children, Ingrid of Greenwich; John and daughter-in-law Janeen of Clinton; Thomas of Ridgefield; Alma and son-in-law Steven Smith of Port Chester, N.Y.; Marie and son-in-law David Micik of Greenwich; her son-in-law Perry Greene of Greenwich and former daughter-in-law Rose Olsen of Greenwich. She was predeceased by her daughter, Patricia Greene. She leaves behind her eight grandchildren, Danielle Greene Budding, William Greene, Amy Olsen, Elizabeth Olsen, Christopher Olsen, Bryan Smith and his wife Heather, Brendan Micik and Michael Micik; her four great-grandchildren, Ian Budding, Matthew and Spencer Greene and Hunter Hanson. Helen is predeceased by her siblings, brother Gregory Comnes, brother George Comnes and sister Mary Christophersen. She is survived by her youngest sister Muriel Seraso and husband Louis, and her nieces and nephews and their extended families and her brother-in law Mike Fiorito of Greenwich. She is loved and will be sorely missed but never forgotten by her family and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 5th at 11:00 AM at Saint Mary's Church, 178 Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen Comnes Olsen's name may be made to the Nathaniel Witherell Patients' Trust Fund, 70 Parsonage Road, Greenwich, CT 06830.
